Why, why, why?

To anyone who has ever had or been around a toddler you know that WHY is their favorite question. Why is the sky blue? Why is the moon called the moon? Why do we have to sleep?

Along with cuteness, and minor annoyance, there is wisdom in this incessant line of questioning.

Somewhere along the way adults stopped asking WHY. We became more concerned with how and what. What are we doing next? How are we going to get it done? How much is it going to cost? What will it look like and when will it be ready?

That was exactly my line of thinking when faced with a search for a new minister. In fact, my thoughts were: How quickly and efficiently can we conduct a search and have a new minister in place?

Wiser heads prevailed and suggested we pause–not delay, not postpone–just pause to remind ourselves that our lives have changed, and church is changing. The question is not why do we need a minister: The question is deeper: Why do we even exist? In answering WHY–we discover our purpose at a higher more impactful level.

Important Dates:

Rev. Kelly Isola has considerable experience helping churches DISCOVER their Why. We are no longer waiting to get back to normal; that is gone, we need to create our new normal. Rev. Kelly will introduce the concept of Why starting with the Sunday, Jan. 31 talk.

In preparation for diving deeper into the WHY and all that follows, we strongly encourage you to participate in a session we are calling Putting It All on the Table on Sunday, January 31 immediately following the Sunday talk. We are also working on some workshop time (also via Zoom) in February. Please keep an eye out for that.

Leadership expert Simon Sinek first introduced the concept of Starting with Why in 2014. His codification of a seemingly simple concept, exhibited in the Golden Circle below, prompted individuals and businesses to rethink everything. Taking the time to identify and understand the inner, deeper, more profound WHY led naturally to the How and the What and a deeper connection to the true mission of the organization/corporation/church.

Clarity of WHY: Your purpose, cause, or belief.

Discipline of HOW: Your strengths, values or guiding principles.

Consistency of WHAT: Services offered, roles, classes, meditations, music, board, chaplains, plans, procedures, bylaws, meetings, events, staff, volunteers and more.
